1 Dream Blue 17U takes Junior Platinum title

By Bob Corwin

This is the second of five segments on the massive Battle in the Boro 2018. Each will touch on one of the five showcase divisions. For an overview of the event and the five All-tournament teams listed in one article, see the release: https://www.passthaball.com/news_article/show/934195

Junior Platinum Final: 1 Dream Blue 17U (Huntersville, North Carolina) 49-46 Cincy Swish Baltimore (Cincinnati, Ohio)

The Platinum Showcase may not have had the depth of star power of the Titanium (part 1) but there was still plenty of D1 prospects. In this final, a more athletic team (1 Dream Blue 17U) squared off against a group on perimeter shooters (Cincy Swish Baltimore). In the first half, the Cincy shooters (living on the perimeter) were on and 1 Dream was behind 28-22 at half.

In the second stanza, 1 Dream played with better energy and stouter defense while Swish shots were not falling (dying on the perimeter). One problem for Cincy was that its lead player from the first half (10 points), all-tournament Alexa Fleming, missed almost five minutes with a minor injury but still finished with a team high 14 points. She is hard-nosed with both parents being coaches. Meanwhile 1 Dream’s Nia Daniel, Platinum Showcase MVP, continued her scoring finishing (14 points in half two) with a game high 24. Daniel, a North Carolina commit, is a quality athlete who can attack the basket.

With just over a minute left, 1 Dream point guard Jordan McLaughlin (5-7, 2019) went down with what could have been a serious spinal cord injury. After a lengthy delay involving the paramedics being summoned, Cincy decided to forfeit the game trailing by three. Note 1 Dream players holding her warm-up jersey in victory photo! I am pleased to report that Jordan appears to be recovering nicely and is back on her feet!

Other all-tournament team members from final Jessica Timmons, a high major in the class of 2021, is a multi-dimensional scorer whose play helped 1 Dream reach the final (good D but quiet offensively there with five points). Kathryn Garry helped Cincy Swish reach the final by hitting three’s (three in the final).

Not a misprint

If you carefully read the list below, you will come to Kiyomi McMiller listed as a “2024” point guard. This rising seventh grader was highly impactful as her team won its pool and reached the second round of bracket play. Already well known in the DC area, with continued improvement, look for McMiller to be a name on the national scene in the years ahead.

Special thanks to Tara Arnold, Harry Elifson, Marissa Holbert, Tim Lownsdale, Ryan Murray, Nick Ruebel, Matt Shewmake and Kyle Turnham who served with me on the All-Tournament Selections Committee. Evaluating approximately 270 Showcase teams was not easy!

Players below are listed alphabetically with height, position, graduation year and club team with home town in parenthesis.  The criteria for selection was performance at the event in conjunction with success of the team.  Congratulations to all selected!
