Westlake takes American Division title; Ensworth rolls in the National Division

By Bob Corwin

In its 21 th year, the Naples Holiday Shootout had two different scenarios in its finals. For Westlake (Atlanta, Georgia), the 4th time at Naples was the charm as in won the American Division in a hard fought battle with Sacred Heart Academy (Louisville, Kentucky) by a score of 63-55. The National Division saw Ensworth School (Nashville, Tennessee) blitz Germantown Academy (Fort Washington, Pennsylvania) 73-50. The event, consisting of two eight-team divisions, was held at Barron Collier High School in Naples, Florida, during December 28-31, 2019, period with no play on Sunday, December 29. About 28 colleges (mostly Division 1) attended at least one day of the event presented by the Florida Gulf Coast Sports Foundation.

While one might argue the American was the stronger division, there was more balance between the two than in recent years. There was a lot of depth as to team talent amongst the 16 teams present. Seven of the teams have been or are currently ranked by one or more national poll.

Looking at the American Division final…

Westlake High School (Atlanta, Georgia) 63-55 Sacred Heart Academy (Louisville, Kentucky)

The difference in this game was better half court D by the Georgians that made Sacred Heart struggle to get good looks in periods one (won 17-11), three (9-8 favoring Sacred Heart) and four (24-13 favoring Westlake). The second quarter was dominated by the attacking of Sacred Heart freshman guard Triniti Ralston (5-6) who scored 12 points helping to give her team a 33-31 lead at the break.

The key adjustment in half two was putting Westlake’s ace defender Ta’Niya Latson (Division MVP, see below) on Ralston helping to hold her to just one second-half point. Throughout the second half Sacred Heart struggled to score (13 points total) while Westlake scored enough to be up 50-45 at the 5:25 mark. For much of the last five minutes of the contest Westlake frustrated the Kentuckians by spreading the court and attempting (mostly successfully) a delay game. Latson led all scorers with 28 points while Sacred Heart was led by Kristen Clemons (see below) with 20 points.

Looking at the National Division final…

Ensworth School (Nashville, Tennessee) 73-50 Germantown Academy (Fort Washington, Pennsylvania)

The game pitted a highly experienced Germantown Academy with a handful of signed mid-major (and a few a year younger) division one players versus Ensworth’s mostly younger Power 5 prospects. From the opening tap Ensworth used its speed and quickness to force turnovers and turn them into points (also shot a strong 48.5% from the field for the game). After one quarter the team from Nashville led 29-12 and 49-27 at half. The second half saw no real success by the team from Pennsylvania at threatening the lead. Kaiya Wynn (see below) led all scorers with 24 points while Dontavia Waggoner (see below) posted 20 points for as yet undefeated Ensworth. Jaye Haynes led Germantown Academy with 18 points.

Below in alphabetical order (with listed height, graduation year and school) is the All-Tournament Teams of the American and National Divisions. School location is in parenthesis.

American Division All-Tournament Team

Janiah Barker 6-3 2022 Tampa Bay Technical High School (Tampa, Florida)

Considered one of the very top prospects in the 2022 class, Barker posted double digit scoring in all three games (double-double of points/rebounds in middle game). She is powerful in the lower key, passes well and has a nice face-up stroke at mid-range.

Kristen Clemons 6-0 2020 Sacred Heart Academy (Louisville, Kentucky)

Signed at Belmont University for volleyball, Clemons would be a contributor for that school if she decided to play basketball as well. She is physical in the lower key and finishes well around the basket. She held the middle together for her team at the event.

Raven Johnson 5-8 2021 Westlake High School (Atlanta, Georgia)

One of the top point guards in US high school basketball, Johnson does what is needed to win whether it be scoring, involving others or defending. Some point guards collect points or assists. Johnson collects “W’s”.

Ta’Niya Latson (MVP) 5-8 2022 Westlake High School (Atlanta, Georgia)

An elite defender, Latson looks to score primarily via penetration or off her defense. She posted double digit scoring in all three contests in helping her team win its division and in doing so earned MVP honors.

Anna Walker 6-0 2020 Bradley Central High School (Cleveland, Tennessee)

Signed with University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Walker balances aggressive attacking with face-up shooting playing within the offense. She helped Bradley Central to third place in American Division with a 2-1 mark.

Coriah Beck 5-8 2020 Fayetteville High School (Fayetteville, Arkansas)

Signed with Memphis, Beck plays all over the court. While being physically strong, she spends more time in the key than might be expected for her team which is somewhat lacking height. She scores at mid-range and attacking the basket. Her 17-point performance in game three helped lead her team to third place in the National Division.

Andrea Daley 6-0 2021 Miami Country Day School (Miami, Florida)

Daley plays with good energy, rebounding hard and scoring near the rim. She posted three double-digit point totals including a double double (points/rebounding) in the middle of her team’s three games.

Jaye Haynes 5-9 2020 Germantown Academy (Fort Washington, Pennsylvania)

Committed to LaSalle, Haynes is an above average athlete with a good perimeter stroke inside and beyond the arc. She posted double digit scoring in all three games in Naples as her team finished second.

Dontavia Waggoner 5-11 2020 Ensworth School (Nashville, Tennessee)

Committed to NC State, Waggoner can score from behind the arc, at middle distance and near the rim. She posted double-digit scoring in all three games and double-doubles (points/rebounds) in games one and two.

Kaiya Wynn (MVP) 5-10 2021 Ensworth School (Nashville, Tennessee)

Athletic with a good motor, Wynn set the tone early in the final with 12 points in the first quarter and in doing so edged out several talented teammates for MVP honors. She posted double-doubles (points/rebounds) in the semi-final and final showing an ability to score at all three levels. She has Power 5 offers on the table.
